I'm trying to get a whole bunch of numbers in the format (-0.007). I'm trying to make it so it automatically adds the parentheses (no problem with custom cell formatting) however, no matter what i try, the negative sign (for numbers that are negative) will always appear outside of the parentheses. Is there any way to fix this? Instead of looking like this: (-0.007), it looks like this -(0.007) when i type in the number -0.007. Any help is much appreciated.

I'm running Excel 2003 SP2.

Thanks for any help you can give...

0.00;-(#.00);- doesn't seem to solve the problem, as the negative sign still appears outside of the parentheses.

Go to cell format > Select Numbers > Select the format that you want.

Set up a new location where you can put the following formula to match the data entry area. (I used A1 as example; you will have to start with whatever cell area you are using)

=IF(A1<0,"-"&"("&A1*-1&")",A1)

If all you want is a special appearance it will work fine.
The downside of this is the cells are now text and can't be treated as a number. The formula should work with plus or minus numbers.
