i'm thinking about retiling my own bathroom. it can't be that difficult. the only thing i'm confused about is the toilet. how would i go around the toilet without having to remove it? and what supplies would i need for this type of job?

You would actually need to take the toilet up. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it. That should empty it. Then you would loosen the bolts securing the toilet to the floor and carefully lift the toilet off the floor. You will need to buy a new wax ring to go under the toilet around the drain in the floor.
You'll probably need a nice wide scraper or putty knife to get the old linoleum off the floor. Once you've got it all up, you'll need to lay down cement backer board and screw that down and seal all the seams. Then you can dry-lay the tile so that you'll know what cuts you'll need to make in the tiles, like around the sink and tub, and probably around the walls. You should always tile from the center of the room out to the edges.
Supplies you'll need: A wet saw for cutting the tile, a grout float, sponge, notched trowel for laying down the thinset under the tile, a bucket, tile nippers for any small cuts you need to make.

www.diynetwork.com has a really informative Do It Yourself section for laying a tile floor. It's not that easy, but the results are gorgeous if you do it right. My husband and I put down tile in the hallway by our bathroom and laundry closet, and we even got brave and did a listello border. You can't tell that it wasn't professionally done. Take your time and do it the right way, and your new tile floor will look great for many years to come.

Your bathroom will certainly look much better if floor tiles are set very neatly. Things that you need are a tile adhesive, a sponge, clean cloth, small hammer (tap the tile with the hammer's wood handle), thin metal scraper, tile diamond cutter, plastic bowl, water. I'm sure the hardware personnel will guide you as to the list of all supplies you need. Enjoy this project.

You can tile over the existing linoleum. Just buy the new tiles and heavy duty scissors. for cutting in around the toilet. If you have missing tiles or broken corners, you may be able to get something to fill. Ask you local hardware store what they recommend.
