We are thinking about getting a swiss mountain dog..and would like to hear your experiences. From what I've read..they sound like great loyal dogs....but am trying to do all the homework/research I can before we make our decision. Thanks!

We have a big 2500Sq. ft. house and 1.5 acres of land...I don't believe space would be a problem..but I have heard that they suffer seriously from seperation anxiety, and we both work during the day...I am able to get home at lunch time..but only have 30 minutes....just long enough to let it out to potty and eat a quick bite.....

Our close friends have two Greater Swiss. They are sooo sweet. They invested in training school simply becase of their size. They wanted a little help to ensure that the dogs were well trained. The female is about 80lbs the male is much larger.

They do shed and want to eat everything in sight. They dominate a room when they are in it simply because of their size.

You may want to set up a date with someone with a large dog. See if you can dog sit for a weekend. These animals will change you lifestyle.

Swiss Mountain dogs are considered a Giant breed of dog. They can reach up to 125 pounds. Being such a big dog they do come with some health issues. They have heart, joint, elbow, and hip problems. They generally live to be about 7 years old any time after that is considered a gift.

Knowing all this and you still want to get one then by all means do so they are very gentle dogs and have been knowto be great with children. they do need training just because of their size but after this is done they make wonderful family pets.
