I don't know what's "typical" but I have an outfit for my baby. My sister gave me a little hat that her son came home from the hospital in, so my baby is going to come home from the hospital in that too, and I just bought a little white sleeper to match the hat.

It's all up to you, if you want your baby to come home in a special outfit, than get one... but really unless you are coming home to a houseful of guests, your baby would probably rather have something comfortable. Anything comfortable and affordable that suits you would be fine, I'd say! :)

I brought a ton of "cute" things, but realized when my son was born that he was still to delicate for all of the buttons and hooks and layers in the outfits. The very best thing in my opinion is a traditional layette pajama with a matching hat. No matter the season, the baby should be covered and their little feet and head especially. This is the most comfortable for them. My son wore gowns and pajama rompers for about 5 weeks before I really started to dress him.

In general you should dress a newborn in one more layer than you are wearing - nothing more. Don't overdress a baby in too warm clothes.

Also something very soft for new skin. I recieved a number of lovely embroidered outfits that were cotton rather than tee-shirt kind of cotton???? but they were too scratchy.

Most of all - make sure you have a car seat and it is installed properly - the hospital likely won't let you leave without one.

We had a dressy outfit to take a pic in at the hospital. But my daughter was born well 2 yrs ago tomorrow and it was cold out so all we were worried about was her staying warm. Just dress the baby comfortably and wheather appropriate.

My twin boys wore matching footed sleepers-they were so small they barely fit.

My daughter, however, wore a dress that looked exactly like the one that I wore home from the hospital as an infant. It was made by Feltman Brothers...and it was absolutely perfect. It wasn't too frilly and lacy, just a simple white thin cotton dress with a slip under it. What made it so special was the fact that they still made the same dress after 25 years!

Good luck!

A sleeper or other one peice outfit and a hat. Booties, unless the sleeper has feet.
I bought a few newborn things so the baby had some things that actually fit her. Yes, she outgrew them fast. But it was nice to have a few clothes that fit her well those early weeks.

Please ignore that first response.....some people do not know how to stay out of questions that they know NOTHING about.

Something comfortable for the baby. I've always done Pj's, Onesie, socks and a blanket something that the baby is comphy in. Nothing too tight or jean outfit. Hope this helps.

My husband and I went through boxes of clothes to pick the "perfect" outift. Not only were we way too busy to get her dressed up for just a car ride, but getting a wiggly baby's arms and legs into anything was not worth it for me...we took her home in the shirt she was already wearing that the nurses dressed her in and about 4 blankets wrapped around her in the car seat (it was snowing out).

Congratulations on your new baby!!!
Put him or her in whatever you want, it won't matter!!
I had an adorable outfit picked out but my mom had to run up to a local baby store to buy a preemie outfit. I remember putting a lot of thought into beforehand but not even once after it was actually time to put it on.

Your question makes me smile. :) New parents who are just bringing a baby home from the hospital have WAY bigger things to worry about than what that baby is wearing. Pretty much what the baby NEEDS to wear is a diaper, a onesie, and enough clothes to keep it warm for the drive home.

If this is YOUR baby you are asking about, congratulations!
