i think you should try the bike. i like the idea mentioned about riding to the gym (and the lowered pollution), but it's also good to keep in mind that cycling is a great activity that you could probably do for years to come. plus, you can go a lot farther on a bike than by foot.

if you don't want to ride an actual bike, switching up between the gym bike and the treadmill is the best option. u'll condition yourself for bike riding and will work your legs out, you'll condition yourself to be able to run a good distance, and you'll have a workout that isn't a "broken record". hey, maybe you'll end up liking the bike better

The answer to this question really depends on what you want to acheive. If the answer is "general fitness", then you probably will benefit from doing both excercises. The human body can adpat to excercises that are done too regularly, and thus the excercises become less effective. Varying your routines will maxmize your benefit.

Spending some time on the excercise bike will also help take some stress off of your legs. Running every day can cause a whole host of peoblems with your knees, hips, ankles, etc, whereas the bike is a low impact workout.

with cycling, you usually develop your legs faster than any other part of the body. You will loose weight overall and fat all over your body just by working out. Running works out more of the body simply because of the impact of the running. Cycling is more easy on the body and so requires doing it more or longer to get the same workout. Unless, you are doing mountain biking where you go to trails and ride there. In that case, you are burning just as many calories if not more as running. The trade off in days sounds okay to me. I work out with weights on some days and others i go riding... either mountain biking or road biking. I don't run anymore... i did that enough after all my years in the military. I've lost weight and kept it off by riding my bike and doing the weights thing so for me it has worked. Can't see why it wouldn't work for you.

Running will work more muscles than the sitting bike. You will burn more fat from the waist section on the treadmill. But if you want to switch it up it won't hurt that much. Some find it more difficult to get your heart rate where it needs to be on those types of bikes.

Try riding a bicycle to the gym, your b/f's place (and a few other places).

You will get more exercise and reduce pollution at the same time.

Be warned getting out on a bicycle is addictive, you might just want to skip the gym and keep on riding.
