My dad is a smoker and he coughs constantly lately. My family wants him to go get his lung checked up but he refuses to. Also he just won't quit smoking even though he says he will.

So how should I go about talking him into seeing a doctor and quitting smoking for his own benefit? Thanks.

Your father is certainly old enough to know the consequences of smoking. Take him aside and tell him you love him very much and want him around for a long, long time and want him to get checked by a doctor. His lungs have already been damaged by the smoking but they won't get any worse if he stops smoking now. If he really wants to quit smoking he will on his own.

you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink. so heres the plan. hypnosis worked on me so i think if you make suggestions while he's sleeping it may work. you will want to phrase things carefully. always speak softly and pleasently. heres some examples to repeat while hes out... your throat feels cool and relaxed. you know that this is because you are breathing clean air. you are a clean air breather... a drop of pure nicotine the size of a pinhead is enough to kill a horse. you dont want poison you don't neeeed poiiison...now rember you feel good this day a nice walk is a good idea and you realize that you don't need to take anything with you. when you eat, you like to breathe clean air make other similar examples... notice when he smokes after doing certian things...(keep at this... dont make any mention of quitting while hes awake. get everyone in on this... have each family member do this... let everyone read this but him. and rember not to mention cigaretts you dont want that in his subconcince... just keep it cool act as normal as possible. try to have fun with this....

This is from a smoker trying to quit: Encourage him, encourage him, encourage him! Don't harp on the negative aspects of smoking. Focus on the positives for himself and the rest of the family. Tell him to contact a support group, or you contact them and have them send him some stop smoking information. Pray for him.......

You know, to be honest, it may be too late for him to quit. It sounds like he's been smoking for years so even if he quits now, he'll still have consequences. Perhaps you can try showing him pictures of peoples' lungs who have smoked for years so he can see what he's doing to his insides. Some people don't care though. Your dad sounds like one of them.........I'm sorry.
