Hemi means half - so Hemi-sphere is Half a sphere!
Check out the work of Frei Otto for ground breaking research into sphericsl/bubble etc. structures. It's from the 60's but still not beaten!

It's like you cut an orange or an apple in half, what you are left with is two hemispheric structures. An iglu is also a hemispheric structure.

A sphere is a ball-shape; hemi- means half; so if it's literally hemispherical it is like an upturned cup, with the wall starting in from vertical at ground level.
Some people might use the term loosely to describe any dome shape.
