If you are not yet in med school I would wait to decide. Everything you think you know on the subject is just skimming the surface of it. In fact, when they interview you to get into medical school they will ask 'What area do you think you will specialize in?" The answer to that question is, "I don't know which area yet. I do not have enough information on the subject."

They want you going in there with an open mind, not already set in your ways.

Orthopaedic Surgery
You get to perform spectacular surgery that are majority of the time not life threatening. Therefore you get to work your entire career without the thought of loosing a patient, and the reward of repairing a 10 year old child's broken leg just to have him come back eight years later and thank you for helping him win a State Cross-Country Championship are second to none. The downside of course is that you must work on elderly patients and decide whether or not they really do need a hip replacement, or should they just stay in a wheel chair. But the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

If you aren't in your third year of med school, you really don't need to know.

First and second year med school is typically set up for lectures and classes. Third and fourth years will be clinical rotations through each and every area of medicine. At the end of your third year, you will apply to NRMP for a residency in your chosen area or specialty. Until you actually go through each rotation, you won't know if a given area will be acceptable for you, as work load, call schedule, subject matter, and clinical skill will be different.

You don't say where you are in your training, but I would guess that you have not yet gone into your medical school clinical rotations.

When you are "in the trenches", you will find the sort of work and type of people that you enjoy.

I went into medial school thinking I would be a family doc or pediatrician, but ended up in anesthesiology because that is where I fit in. Those are my people; I am one of them. Anesthesiology is fun and interesting for me. If I had to be a pediatrician now, I'd put a bullet in my head.

You'll find your niche. Go into your rotations with an open mind, and you'll find something that interests you.

Good luck.

Have you started medical school yet? If not, don't decide on one specialty yet...wait until you start your rotations in your third year to begin formulating opinions (in other words, go into your rotations with an open mind). Quite often, people will go to medical school set on one specific specialty but once they start their rotations they fall in love with a totally different specialty.

People who hate stress like derm.

Arrogant people with God complexes go into surgery.

People who hate people go into radiology.

People who love drugs go into anesthesiology.

People who can't decide go into family practice.

...Just some stereotypes to chew on; honestly nobody but you can know; only you know your personality. Don't go into something for the money; if you do you will become another burned-out unpleasant doctor. You'll have YEARS to decide what to do when you're in med school and doing your rotations.
