From MSNBC.com:

BEIJING - Chinese scientists have succeeded in implanting electrodes in the brain of a pigeon to remotely control the bird's flight, state media said.

Xinhua News Agency said the scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center at Shandong University of Science and Technology in eastern China used the micro electrodes to command the bird to fly right or left, and up or down.

The implants stimulated different areas of the pigeon's brain according to electronic signals sent by the scientists via computer, mirroring natural signals generated by the brain, Xinhua quoted chief scientist Su Xuecheng as saying.

Imagine the fun juvenile deliquents would have!!

I am visiting this question on a friend's suggestion.

I would post pigeons in school yards armed with video surveilance equipment and microphones. Behavioral education works best when accompanied with immediate consequences to positive and negative responses. A pigeon could give BOTH types of reinforcement if one could control his flight, behavior, and digestive system.

In addition, keeping the pigeons could be an interesting project for both the well-behaved child (feeding/keeping pigeons and care of chicks) and the poorly behaved child (cleanup around the playground).

Safer schoolyards, more effective behavior management, less money to support playground staff and police security...
