certainly not, so long as you don't ask for gifts on the invites! A housewarming is just what it sounds like a time to make your new place yours, to "warm" the energies and atmosphere with friends and family, so I say go for it! I did it myself and it didn't seem tacky to me.

How does one not host their own housewarming party?

Still wondering if the "tacky gods" will strike you down? Call it something else.

I thought that's how they happened. I've never heard of anyone who gave someone else a housewarming party. After all, it's your house.

It only tacky if you expect gifts. I won't send formal invitations out, rather I would call each person up and individual invite them to your home. Tell them you are excited to host your first party in your new home and would like them to come over for food and drinks. This way your guests won't feel obligated to bring gifts.

I wouldn't call it a "housewarming" party and I wouldn't expect gifts either....just invite your friends over to see your new home and don't expect anything but well wishes!

Not at all! My boyfriend's father just did that and it went really well. Might be tacky to ask your guests to bring gifts, though... :)

Congrats on the new abode!

No, I would say that that is the norm nowadays. It will give you a chance to show off your new home. Have a great time!
