Royal Lahina Resort! Its great! I have stayed there twice, it is right on the beach and they have an awesome breakfast in the morning! Another plus about the resort is that it is not around all the other resorts that are clumped together (eg marriott, hilton...etc.) So there are not a ton of people on the beach! Royal Lahina is in Kanapali and just right down the road from 1 of the really nice shopping places (Whalers Village)
Have a great trip, I am jealous....not going back to Maui until Christmas! :o)

I just came back from Maui, we stayed at Outrigger Royal Kohana at Kanapali beach. It's withing your budget and the location is right on the beach. The rooms are great, like a condo. They get booked up very fast, in fact they are booked for the next two month. When we moved out two hours later new people moved in. Book using Expedia you'll save money if you book air and hotel together. Good luck and have a great time!

The most beautiful place is the Hyatt on Kaanapali Beach. It won't be 150 a night, but if you ask around the kaanapali area you may find something less expensive but with the same surroundings. Another great place with moderate prices is the old whaling town of Lahaina in Maui. Great restaurants and reasonable accommodations.

Definitely check out cyberrentals.com, they have some very reasonable rates for condos. IF you want to save a little money, eating some meals in will help a LOT. I'd personally stay on the West side, lots more romantic spots there. . . Lahaina, Kanaapaali, Honokowai, Napili. If you stay in any of the "west side" spots, you'll be close to everything great there (it's not that big). I'm from there:-) Have fun!

Maui Sands is inexpensive. I stayed there once. You may want to up your budget at least 40 more a night. Or go with another couple to share expenses.

The Fairmont itself is a prettier construction. Its more suitable remote from each thing and has a much extra initimate putting. Plus it has a awesome eating position — Nick's Fishmarket.
