The reason Chinese New Year is celebrated is simply because the people have survived or passed another year - in Chinese it's actually sometimes referred to as 'Guo' - pass 'Nian' - year. Which means that they have lived and survived another year.

In Chinese belief there used to be a monster that would come every year and devour people, livestock and cause trouble. It was thought that this monster couldn't stand loud noises or bright lights so every Chinese New Year Chinese people will set off fire works and fire crackers to drive away the New Year monster or any other evil spirits.

One more thing (to everyone) - this year is the year of the 'pig' not the:

Boar
Golden Boar
Mega Boar
Golden Pig
Power Pig
Omega Warthog

Just the year of the 'pig' - if you're a pig and are unhappy about it - blame your parents, but stop making up silly names.
