In the main story there is a girl whose name is vita.
she is living with her mother on 86th street. Her mother
translate Latin and Greek history books and it’s about
3 years that her father has left them.Every night
she writes a letter for her father but she doesn’t send
them because she doesn’t know where to send them.
Her mother has friend named Mr. Farfel and vita really
hates him and call him Old farfel.
Helen is one of vita’s class classmates that vita hates her too much
because she is always flirting with the boys. In vita school they have play about “Helen of troy” s myth and vita wants to play Helen but her teacher Mr. Dodd gave the Helen part to Helen because he believed that Helen is best for Helen of troy and he gave vita the horse, and she got really mad of that why she should take, why because she is more beautiful than me but she doesn’t even know who was the Helen of troy.
One day her mother with Mr. Farfel went out for dinner and Vita was alone at home that suddenly she remembered the Parthenon ,its where the Greeks
bur ned offerings on an altar. They believed this would bring them what they wanted. LUCK . Then she decide to do something like them.
She cut through the lip of a cup and her letters and something else then she put on her white sheet costume, then she thought of saying something to make it more like ceremony. she just say some word that she knew in Greek (but they were just some food name) and as she say them she burned the letters in a bowl. Then she thought of what she want: to be Helen, to have her father come back and to Old Farfel leave.
After when her mothers back from dinner she looked upset and it seemed that she won’t see Old Farfel anymore.
After some days Helen got chicken pox and Vita felt guilty because she believed it was her ceremony that did this to her but she still wants to play Helen of Troy and after she told her teacher , he gave her the part but still he was not sure about it.
In the last moments of play between a lot of smoke that surrounded her she heard beating of a swan’s wings .
