I am a British student and am saving to study at the new york film academy for 2 years. If I complete course i will get 79 college credist what does this actually mean? Bear in mind I am english and have no knowledge of the USA system

I'm not familiar with the British credit system. But will try to give you some comparible ideas so it might make better sense.

First of all, colleges in the US either go by semester hours or quarter hours. Sounds like if they are stating 79 credits, that it is probably semester hours.

The way the hours generally work here are based on time spent in class. So for example, if you took a psychology course in the fall, it might be 3 college credits. That would mean you would spend 3 hrs a week in class for that semester.

Some courses do avert from this sensibility though. For example, you might take an aerobics class and still spend 3 hrs a week, but only get 1 credit hr. It's usually fitness courses, science labs, music labs, art labs, that will be like this. It is possible some of your film courses might be that way too, but I'm sure most will be 3 or 4 hrs per course.

If this is for an undergraduate degree, 79 hrs is quite a few hours. Most undergraduate degrees are about 120-140 credits or hours to get the degree. So if you will get 79 hrs, then that is a decent portion of the degree.
