I am most likely applying for a job as a part-time auxiliary police officer. The job description was traffic, church events, etc and occasional full-time officer fill in. What does that mean? Will I be a sworn officer? Will I be carrying a firearm? Will I need the same extensive training?

Many law enforcement agencies utilize the services of "volunteers" to support the much needed help where tax dollars are diverted to other than law enforcement.

The use of "auxillary" or "reserve" officers is done after the individual receives classroom and on the job training. You are not a sworn officer unless you meet your states minimum requirements through a recognized state law enforcement academy.

My own state provides such an academy for reserve officers at the expense of the applicant.

Most likely you will be working with a certified officer if riding patrol or with other reserves at special events such as footballs games or special events requiring an extra amount of law enforcement presence!

Best wishes and thank you for helping us out!

In my PD our auxiliary officers have all went through their training and are sworn officers. They carry firearms because they go through firearm training like we do. They do not however go through as much training as we do as full time officers as LEADS training or NCIC. However you will go through radio training and traffic and verbal judo and that kinda stuff.
