Raft making the tom saywer way..very basic.
The first thing you need to make a raft is wood that floats. The best kind of wood is balsa because it's very light weight and floats well. Then you need some rope to tie together the pieces of balsa. Before you put it in the water, it is a good idea to paint the wood and rope with wax or tar to make it waterproof. Otherwise, the wood and rope will soak up the water eventually and your raft will be history! Homemade rafts were a popular way for kids to travel down the Mississippi during Mark Twain's time.
