I can speak from my experiences there in 1972 and 1973. I was a fighter pilot in the F-4 Phantom II.

We actually were the first to drop laser guided smart bombs, mainly the M-83 1000 lb bombs, and the M-84 2000 lbs bombs. The 500 pound M-82 were rarely fitted with smart bomb laser kits.

The dumb bombs mentioned above were fitted with a laser guidance package and movable fins that allowed the heretofore "dumb" bomb to get smart. Its laser tracking eye locked in on the laser reflection from another aircraft (today's fighter can illumuinate their own targets) and flew right down to the target with minimal CEP (circular error of probability).

We also used napalm, 20mm cannon, snake eyes (M82 with an extended fuse to allow the bomb to detonate before hitting the ground), CBU muntions of all kinds, air to air missiles both radar and heat seeking types.

Some specialty fighters were called wild weasels and they had the capability to fire special air to ground missiles that destroyed sam fire control radar sites.

On the U.S. side, Viet Nam saw the introduction of the M-16 assault rifle, the concept of the "Air Calvary" and an expansion in the role of the Special Forces.

The opposition was supplied a large amount of Soviet and Chinese made weaponry, but the most destructive weapon by far was Jane Fonda's ego.
