We need "small" float ideas with a patriotic theme for a preschool group. Any ideas?
(please keep any anti-war comments to yourselves)

There are so many things you could do- depending on the size of this " float " that you are talking about....

First, you could use wagons as your base so that the kids could either sit in them or could pull them safely- decorate their bikes with stars/ stripes, crepe paper as part of the parade float - tricycles and let them ride them, etc..

Suggestions for themes would be to choose some figures in history and that way the float building could be a lesson too-

Betsy Ross and how the flag was first made. Teach them what it stands for- why it has more stars now than it first did, etc... Let all of the kids wear red, white and blue and carry flags ( which you can buy inexpensively online - check sites like OrientalTrading.com) ... and for a fun personal touch- you can make huge flag out of a white sheet that the kids can paint -they can paint the stripes and then use their hand prints as the stars!! They'll love it! They can carry it as a banner backdrop and dress somebody up like Betsy Ross and pull them in a decorated wagon/float with stars and stripes in front of it.

Or you can use the liberty bell, statue of liberty as theme jumping points too and have use similiar float items. There are a number of ways to have a float be patriotic- but not pro or anti war since you are dealing with younger kids...

Feel free to reach out to me for more ideas... but that's what I thought of first...

Patriotic Float Ideas

Get some empty paper towel rolls and cut them about 4 inches long. Have the children color it brown or whatever color they want. The next day have them color a butterfly and either let them glue it to a popsicle stick or have it stapled. Put that aside on a shelf. Next day let the kids make a small caterpillar and tell them the roll they colored is the butterflies chrysalis (they will learn what that is and remember it) then have them put the caterpiller in the roll. Tell them about how a butterfly is made. Then after the children are gone, remove the caterpillar inside it and roll up the butterfly for them to find the next day. Or you could do Mistress Mary Quite Contrary and let them plant some flower seeds in a clear plastic glass so they can watch it grow. Makes a nice little Mother's Day gift too. Another thing is let them make hot air balloons with paper and string then put them out in the hallway so when the door is opened they appear to be flying. We are not allowed to use balloons or egg cartons or anything that is food to make items so we have to be creative. :)

How about a minnie marching band? You could dress them up and give them some cheap instruments to walk the parade route with. As far as a full blown float... a little dangerous to have pre-schoolers on top of a moving float... isn't it? :o)

The banner could read, "Keep it free for me."
The float can be decorated as an American flag.
The kids can march behind, waving mini flags.
