I went into the gas station and they had a missing cat poster and I was asking about it and the guy obviously took my tag number and vehicle info and gave it to the person who put the missing cat sign up and now this crazy lady is coming to my house harassing me because she thinks I took her cat?? Can I get the gas station introuble for giving out information that lead to the lady getting my address and knowing who I am??

Yes she said she had a police friend who ran the tag and she says she is contacting the police because she is sure we took her cat, which we didn't! I wouldn't really say it is to the point of being called "harassment" but she is definatley throwing some threats my way! I'm not worried about her though, I just wanted to know if it was illegal for the gas attendant to give her my information!

No, your license plates are in plain view of everyone. People can pass them on as much as they want to. My concern would be how she got your address from your license plate number. If she has a friend in the Police Dept who ran it and gave it to her, he could be in a world of trouble. I would ask her how she got your address, and call the Police on her if she doesn't stop coming to your house. Don't just avoid her, tell her you have no info for her about the cat, and to not come back. If she comes back, have the Police give her a trespass warning where she can be arrested if she returns again.

No, there is no law against passing on someone's license plate number. The real violation of your privacy occurred with the Police Officer passing along your information to this woman.

Take it easy! She's acting crazy because she wants her cat back, and you are her best lead so far. If you can help her, you really should. If you can't, tell her you can't help and try to calm her down. If she is accusing you and being awful, try to forgive her--her emotions are pushing her into a bad place and she may not be fair or nice with you.

Just assure her that you care about reuniting her with her cat, but can't help her. And promise that if you see the cat, you'll give her a call. If she comes around too often, ask her to stop coming by--if she doesn't stop, call the police--tell them the whole story. I doubt the gas station can get into any trouble, but the cat lady can if she keeps harassing you.

The answer to this comes under freedom of information legislation, which protects private information.

The tag number is in plain sight and therefore not protected information.

HOWEVER the information contained under it like your address iIS portected.

So the person who can be sued for breaching your human rights (artiocles providing right to private life)

is whoever checked the number and gave out your details
