Sometimes people just manage to get degrees and they do not know much about the field the degree describes. Sometimes a degree holder can be better than what degrees show. And sometimes a person without a degree can be even better or more efficient than a person who has a degree. Why on earth they think that people without degree can never work better than the people who have degrees? Why a graded result is taken as it is for the whole life whereas a person can always improve a lot?

Because people in general feel safe surrounded by boundaries. And the concept of degrees present an outline of measured and fixed boundary. Degree is a yardstick with people of authority to keep the chaos under check. Otherwise how would efficiency or proficiency be assessed for gain or loss; success or failure?
For a smooth functioning of administration ,picking up a degree is essential. that is why degrees too become a commodity, in line for sale--to make judgement easier.

thats seriously a very good question and i seriously believe that no degrees can judge persons capabilities. i mean degree is one of the ways to achieve ur desired goal and not the only way to achieve what you want. it is seriously difficult to change ppls mentality but thats how the world works..i personally believe that no such test is possible which can decide a persons potentials as it completely depends on the person himself to decide where he wud lik to stand and he can directly land overthere. i believe that if a prsn has potentials and if he really wants to do something, he will find the way out frm somewhere.

At least a degree is supposed to be sure the holder has covered the basics of the field ...and that is important.... it is just a safety net.

thats the problem with our country.....still its the degree which can get u job!
holding a degree means u r a knowledgeable person as compared to a one who does not have a degree!
this habit wont change and we would have to live with it
