I have a car that had broken down and a mechanic offered to fix it.
His charge was $400, I paid a $150 deposit and last month I paid him another $150.
Now he has filed a mechanics lienand wont return any of my calls.
What can I do?
I had spoken with him once before and told him I had the rest of the money but no communicating after that..

If he's filed a mechanic's lien the only thing to do is pay it, get it released and go get the car. It will include court fees. If he refuses to arrange to release the car, advise him you'll be suing him. Notifie him by registered mail you have the balance and give him 5 days to arrange to return your vehicle.

If he has filed a mechanics lien on the car it means he wants the rest of the money or he will sell your car for the money. You admit you owe him $100. Why haven't you paid off the debt? Is there a problem with the repairs? Did you sign an agreement listing the repairs and the payment plan? Now you owe him the repair fee and costs for the lien. You need to take care of this asap. If the repairs were not done correctly or he did things not authorized by you then you have recourse against him.

Either pay him the amount you owe him and get your car, or ignore it and he will be able to sell it.

Of course now that a lien has been filed on it, you will owe more because of those costs, also it you didn't pick the vehicle up in a timely manner after the repair he can also add storage fees to the bill. The amount of storage depends on the state, in Oklahoma it would be $15 a day plus tax, or $16.35

Don't call him, go by and pay him what you owe him and take your car home.

Pay them the rest of the money, (Go to them, if required) make certain you get receipts for ALL payments, till fully paid up because, at that point, they should return your car to you. There might be interest charges and you will need to pay those too first, before you can get your car back

Otherwise you will need something like small claims court.

They're right, you do owe him another 100. But I'm confused about the lack of communication on his part. If someone owed me 100 I'd be more than happy to talk to them in order to get it. If you've tried to get in touch with him and can't then go to the shop and try to get in touch with him in person. A Mechanics lein is a way for mechanics to ensure that payment is received one way or another. You pay him what is owed, or he takes possesion of your car. In most cases, it preferable (for all involved) to be paid. Getting a lein, and trying to sell the car, is usually just too much hassle for the mechanic.

don't be surprised if your bill is much more than the 100 you owe him...he has the right to charge storage fee from the day after it was fixed...usually about 5 to 10 dollars a day.

You need to go pay him back and get reciepts of the payment in full. A lien only means that he has to get his money before the property can be transfered to another name. If you pay him back and have reciepts for you payments that he has to take the lien off of your vehicle.

He wants your car. Mail him a check, certified, with no return address. That way he must sign for it. now if you have all the receipts, he is paid in full.

i own a shop, and all you need to do is pay him his money on the car and he will return it to you ,there will be no problems with that part of it,he may decide to charge you storage also,i doubt it though, there must of been some bad communications between you and the shop, that caused this to happen,id pay him,and get my car back.good luck with it.
