Sometimes people just manage to get degrees and they do not know much about the field the degree describes. Sometimes a degree holder can be better than what degrees show. And sometimes a person without a degree can be even better or more efficient than a person who has a degree. Why on earth they think that people without degree can never work better than the people who have degrees? Why a graded result is taken as it is for the whole life whereas a person can always improve a lot?

People judge people by degrees, especially in the professional fields, because that's the only objective way they know TO judge. Sure, if you get to know someone personally, you will get to know whether they are good at what they do or not, but often, that doesn't happen in the professional world, because people aren't looking to get to know people, just to do business. The most deeply a lot of professionals want to get to know someone they aren't already friends with, in their business life, is as a "contact", someone they can trade favors in business with or send business to each other.
