Usually a review of a Michigan tax return is caused by the filling of Form 8379 Injured Spouse and the state will send a copy its injured spouse form to be filled out.

The other reason is an issue (sometimes real, sometimes imaginary) on the Property Tax (or Renters) Credit Form (Form MI-1040-CR)

If the state should send you a letter make certain your tax preparer gets a copy of it so they can double check to see if the letter is correct. I have seen more than half of the adjustment letters Michigan sends out have some sort of error in them. I also have seen more than a few IRS have errors in them as well, so do not automatically assume the preparer did a bad job.

Every return is pending review until it's been processed. 6 weeks is a very normal time for the process.

The state found something in your tax return that warranted a closer look. It might just be a random check, but there's nothing you can do about it. They will contact you directly if they need any more information from you.
