Hmmmmmmm....
In some belief systems, living a solitary life is the only way to reach spiritual enlightenment. It gives one time to reflect on the self, on nature, and so on.
However, being alone in what is essentially a box, cuts off all social contact against one's will.
I guess being left alone with one's thoughts, when those thoughts have typically been 'negative' would be difficult and painful. That's punishment, is it not?
Perhaps these people have only learned to 'vent' all of their anger, hurt, frustration, whatever, toward other people. Being separated from their outlet could be pretty hard.
Punishment is typically supposed to be unpleasant in one way or another, right?

Are you kidding? Think about Robert Hanssen. The spy who is the subject of BREACH. He's in the Super Max prison in Colorado for the rest of his life. In solitary confinement. Imagine. All day, all night. No contact with anyone. Forever. No conversations. Only books, maybe a TV. OMG, I would go crazy after the first few days. Alone with my head? AHHHHH!

being completely alone forces you to think about yourself and your life and why you are where you are. It makes criminals crazy because they don't have anyone to put on a tough guy act for.
