"Adobe PDF is the global standard for trusted distribution and viewing of information. Adobe Reader 8 is the only free software to allow you to more securely collaborate using PDF documents."

In other words, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.

PDF files are standard. Since the Reader is free, essentially anyone in the world can view a PDF file you give them...unlike Microsoft Word.

PDFs are basically any industry standard for document trading.

PDF documents embed the fonts needed to view them, making them bulkier. This enables anyone to view the document in the same format.

Acrobat reader is one (proprietary) method, provided by Adobe, for reading PDF (Portable Document Format) files. It is a free document processor. To *create* pdf files, you can get either Adobe's rather expensive products or one of several either paid-for or free products on the market.

It is used to open and read PDF files, which you will need because PDF files are created by Adobe software.

If you don't have it you may not be able to view some web pages that have content created with adobe.
