Your hair color needs to compliment your skin tone. The absolute best thing to do is go to a colorist with a good reputation.
However, if you don't want/can't afford to do that (we've all been there!), then look at pictures online of celebrities that have your skin tone. What works best for them? What makes their eyes pop? Don't go with a color just because it's in style right now. Not every color looks good with every skin tone.
Just remember that if you have darker hair, it will be hard to go red or auburn, which looks on people with fair skin. I'm a medium brunette, and I tried dyeing my hair red once with a home coloring kit, and it turned out purple. It was a nightmare. That's why I suggest going to a professional.
Also research home coloring kits. Go to web sites like eopinions.com and drugstore.com and look at the reviews. That will also be very helpful for you when you make a decision about which product to use.
Most importantly, don't do it on a whim, especially if you use permanent color. Remember, it's permanent, so be sure you like it. I will usually find the color I want, and wait a week. If I still want to do it in a week, I'll go for it. If not, I drop it and love my hair the way it is :)
Good luck.

block colours are in now instead of highlights/lowlights etc. a really nice brown always looks healthy and if you go too light remember that roots show up very very fast!! Depends on your style too, are you a funky and trendy or classy lady? all makes a difference!! think of what colour clothes you liek to wear, i know it sounds crazy but some colours just dont go with certain hair colours!! like i had read in my hair once and i had a purple top i loved but couldnt wear, it just clashed so much!! happy hunting for the perfect colour!! Word of advice, dont go for permanent until you are sure!! Your hair will not thank you for it!! colour touch is a god way, conditions and lasts a good few weeks.

Electric colours seem hot at the moment. Why not try some bright red or electric blue chunks? You could even just buy some clip-on extensions to see what it looks like. These are available from hairextentions.com

If you're set on changing the color, I recommend brownish red. This is a good color for just about any occasion and can be seen as fun or proffesional. Personally, i think it's better to keep your own color, but that's just me. Unless you're a guy, then keep it brown.

It really depends on your skin tone, gender, and how trendy you're going for. Rich chesnut highlights always look good with brown hair but if you want something trendy, you should go with red to prevent brassiness with brown hair.

Actually your natural hair color is in at the moment! If you're looking for a little more definition just put some nice highlights in it :) It'll add depth and spunk!

Don't dye it, highlight it.
Ask a stylist for the up to date colors.

How about a copperish red. Nothing too extreme, just with a tinge of red.
Blond is OUT, so don't do it!
Anything else will do.
Good luck!
