Depends on the type of hybrid car you're talking about. The general idea to the hybrid car is to minimize the dependency on gas or petrol as much as possible. If you take for example the newer Honda civics and the Toyota prius that both have electric motors that work with the gas motor. The electric motor operates the ignition, as well as when you have the car in idle. So for example you drive in the city alot where the is stop and go traffic at every red light or in rush hour where you are just sitting there and not really moving the car switches off the gas motor and runs on the electric one. This is how they can say they get an average of 50 mpg although how they calculate this changes in 2008.
