Since I'm one who used to be a christian and could not find historical evidence of Jesus' existence, I'll play (I'm pagan btw and not an atheist)...
No one is jumping up and down here, kiddo. In fact, we're all waiting to see the documentary.. most of us think at best, it'll bring up some good questions, but there's no way to determine for certain who it is.. and that's what I'm hearing from most atheists.
Those atheists who do believe the Jesus probably existed are in the majority, btw.
For me, it would at least give some evidence that he was a real person.. it certainly wouldn't make me believe in his deity, especially since the bible claims he resurrected intact after 3 days and that there was no body to find.. and that he was buried in a borrowed tomb.

Who is jumping up and down? I and most atheists I know aren't excited about this. There hasn't been any scientific testing done, and I'm not sure how you could verify the identities of the bodies anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I wish we could find some physical evidence to finally discredit the stupid ressurection story once and for all, but I don't think it's going to happen. It was too long ago, there was very little record keeping, and there is nothing current to compare DNA evidence to. I just have to be content with my own common sense that tells me that people can't really return from the dead.

Finding the bones of Jesus, even if it's NOT a hoax like the other "finding" was which was proven to be a hoax, only means the man really walked the Earth... it does NOT prove any of the claims most Christians make of "divinity". I've always believed Jesus walked the Earth, just disagreed about the "divinity" issue since it's STILL illogical.

who's jumping up and down?
I noticed a question raised on this topic yesterday and one respondant ASSUMED that atheists were willing to just believe this story
atheists just don't believe in anything without proof
edit: to the person above, that would be absolutely correct, however, I will remain cynical about the "supposed" evidence until it's actually proven
but to the asker, don't just assume what atheists are thinking...if you've seen a few responses that suggest that they do just believe it without evidence, that's fine, but don't generalize on the whole of the atheist population
I'm not atheist btw, I'm agnostic, just making a point
and even if it was proven to be Jesus, it would just provide concrete evidence that he existed, nothing more

No I don't see the hipocrisy. We are trying to explain how silly religion is, christians just ramble on and don't listent hough. You don't listen to science, common sense, or reasoning. So many atheists are excited to see if this will destroy the craziest religion in the world. I personally don't see the point, because even if we found complete proof that jesus wasn't the son of God, the idiots who are christians would just twist it anyway.

First of all, I believe that Jmmanuel existed. I do not believe he is anything divine. He was a man who did his best to teach the laws on how to live as human beings. I do not believe he was insane or brought about christianity. I do believe that the controlling warmongers of that time, used him after death as a tool for control of the masses. Anyone can take a story, twist it around to their advantage, and feed it to a group of naive, unknowing and impressionable individuals to control them. There have been many many cult leaders who have done the same thing over several hundred years.

Sorry dude, this atheist thinks it extremely unlikely that millionaire self-publicist bullying film director James Cameron has found Jesus's bones. Whoever is jumping up and down about them, not many of them here. YOU seem to be making a bit of an issue out of it though, I notice.

Hmm, I don't seem to find myself jumping up and down about anything.
Seems the Christians are the most upset about this, not the atheists.
I believe someone corrosponding to who Christians call Jesus did exist. Because of him, Christianity arose.
That doesn't make him supernatural. Many things are attributed to people long after their death. Atheists are usually asking for evidence - good evidence of a diety. This isn't even good evidence that the bones were, who Christians called, Jesus; certainly nothing with regards to him being supernatural, the son of god, et. al. I'm still waiting for good, unambiguous evidence.

I'm sorry, I fail to see the hipocrisy.
I don't think I've ever doubted the ability of Jesus to exist as a normal man who was charismatic and intelligent. Finding his tomb sure doesn't verify that there is a God, only that there was a man named Jesus.

Sure I do. If Jesus hadn't existed, why are there bones? Not to mention, I'm trying to find out in the Bible where it said after he was brought back to life he didn't go back to Heaven as a spirit, and may not have been buried again, even in the same place.
