Many people in prison suffer from serious mental illness and should be receiving treatment. They shoould have received treatment before committing a crime.

When they violate prison rules they are often put in solitary confinement and their illness can become much much worse.

Sadly we do not pay enough attention to preventing crime by making services like mental care readily available. We are a punitive society and don't seem to focus enough on crime prevention.

Because it's the only one which does not physically harm you.
Most people need to be around others and being in solitary confinement just does not work for them. They either accept it or fight it. It's better to accept it because it gives you time to think about everything and it truly humbles you. If you fight it - then you'll probably end up in the psychiatric ward for treatment.
Placing a person in solitary confinement also means you can not harm/hurt anyone else.

There are people who, because of their actions or disfunctional behavior, are unfit to be around anyone.

Frankly, it is too bad that ALL prisoners aren't kept in solitary confinement...Would cut down on violence in prison, fer sure. THey couldn't form their little gangs, and get their little prisonn "tats", bulk up on their excercise equipment, smuggle drugs and rape each other.

In a perfect world, that's the way it would be.

Because by nature, most humans are social creatures, and to deprive them of contact with other humans is generally considered punishment. That and probably if the offender is being violent, it's used to protect the offender and others.

Yeah really, some of us love peace and quiet. I would concider it a good time for meditation . Nothing quiets the savage beast like a 15 minute meditation.

Because when left alone for a long time, well, it actually tends to suck. You start to mutter to yourself, begin to flinch uncontrollably, urinate in your pants, you know, you become crazy.
