Every time I hear about the latest and greatest gadget the story always ends with 'Currently only available in Japan...' and Korea sometimes as well. And I'm not talking about a few month's delay between there and the US market , it's YEARS. As big as the US market is, it seems like they'd want to get stuff over here ASAP. What's the deal?

"Currently available in Japan only" is not Japan's decision. It is U.S. decision for the protection of U.S. makers and products.

You are right. Japanese makers want to sell their quality products in your big U.S. market ASAP.

The U.S. has been accusing Japan for its "closed market" for U.S. products. That is not true. Japan is always open for new, high-tech, quality products. Japanese are the most quality-conscious (not price-conscious) nation in the whole world. That's why U.S. cannot sell its cars in Japan no matter what!

I hope U.S. will open its market for more high-tech Japanese products for the consumers in the U.S.

A lot of that stuff is invented in Japan, so understandably, they get the stuff first.

A lot of the delays in bringing new technology westward is marketing. The companies in Japan know that their target audience is very quick to embrace new gadgets. The US consumer is not as quick to do so. A lot of times, the companies decide that an invention will not translate well to the US, and so it's not released here. Consumers in Japan also show no aversion to paying the price to stay at the cutting edge of technology, where as the price is most often the deciding factor for the American consumer.

I understand that there are folks out there, myself included, that really like getting all of the newest and coolest gadgets available, however, people like that are in the distinct minority, and rushing new items to stores here before the companies can at least find a way to bring the costs down a little, would spell doom for the company releasing the product.

1. Population is much denser and the country is much smaller, making any deployment of technology easier.
2. Government more closely controls the standards, so various companies have an easier time developing products that are interoperable.
3. Culturally, they are more likely to buy the latest greatest gadget as a status symbol, and they all seem to fall into group-think more often. So as soon as one gets the newest cell phone, etc., they all run out and buy it. So from a marketing standpoint, if you want a strong launch, go to the far east

Japan spent a great deal of their resources, after WW2, on minitiarizing everything. This is why their cars are smaller, their electronics are smaller, etc. Space is a commodity in dense populated countries, so money is spent making things smaller. Thus new technologies arise that provide the same technology in smaller packages and better technology in the same size or bigger packages(like we're used to).

They're the ones who make them, and they're crazy about these gadgets, more then anybody else I know.
