I know america did this some years back and i was a successful move. The home office has made such a mess of things that i think they need to start from scratch. There are some overstayers/ failed visa applicants who are still working for little money just because their home country is so bad. these people deseve the right to pay tax and have a bank account.
People who have been apprehended in this country (or if on the run) for a violent/sexual/drug related/ financial crime should still be deported.
But there needs to be something in place so that whole families cannot just recieve multi room housing.e.g the main bread winner should apply first, sought themselves out with accomodation and a job and then send for the family.
Yes- I am an immigrant symphathiser as i believe if things ever got really bad in this country i would hope that i could flee to another.

David S i hope you are talking to Curt or Loanshark there.
When i say if things get bad i mean if terrorism became an overwhelming threat. Or if the BNP got into power.
My parents came over to this country legally from Grenada and worked hard from day one. I just think that people who want to work should be given the chance and not be made to fear the processing system by the disproportionate probability of being refused an application when you have to pay between £350 and £500 for it to be processed....people do pay it and it is non-refundable...who can blame the overstayers when they have just been conned.
