"I know we should have taken away by now" why would you take away a source of comfort to your child away? He will more than likely give it up himself slowly over time, only use during naps/night or when not feeling well. That was how I knew my daughter wasn't feeling well, she would ask for it. She gave it up just before her third birthday, SHE decided that she didn't need it any longer. I had nothing to do with it.

My son was just under 5 months and he stopped wanting them, if you take it away to early it could cause them to suck their thumb which is what happened w my sister as a baby and at age 15 she had to have reconstructive jaw surgery to fix her jaw due to thumb sucking. If your son is 3 wait a little while try to get him to become attached to another security object such as a stuffed toy or blanket. Or wait for him to chew holes in them all and do not buy him anymore, maybe even snip little holes in them yourself

When I was a kid I had a dummy/pacifier up until I was 5, I was quite late giving it up. For a while kids whine for them, but eventually they just forget that they want it. You just gotta be firm.

One of my cousins used it until she was four, her mother burned her pacifiers in front of her so she knew they were gone, and that was that. There was a lot of crying the first week, then she got over it.

My oldest was one. Everytime I lost one, I just never bought new ones. Then, when they were finally all gone, we just didn't use them anymore. The whole thing took a couple of months, and she really didn't miss them at all.

my daughter was 9mos. she put it down herself. My boys were almost a year old. We made them leave it in the bed, they could have it at naptime and bedtime only. After a while they forgot about it and we took them while they were sleeping and threw them away.
