I have a 7 month old male Chihuahua, named Elvis, and he has a certain toy that he absolutely loves. He "makes love" to this toy many times a day. He does it so much at one time that he completely passes out. When he passes out he doesn't come to for about 5-10 seconds. I am worried, I don't want him to pass out one day and not wake-up. What can I do?

I don't want to take it away because I don't want him to have separation anxiety, and get depressed. He has a ton of other toys but he only "makes love" to this one.

I don't want to get him nutered because it makes him fat.

You need to worry if your dog is getting low blood sugar (not an uncommon problem in small dogs). He may be using up too much energy and giving himself a blood sugar drop. I would take away his toy.

As for him getting fat if neutered, yes it is possible that will be the case. I have a a nuetered male that is almost 7 and as skinny as he was when I had him done. However being intact doesn't protect your dog from being fat. My intact male gets pretty chunky in between the girls' heat cycles. So it can go either way. Unless you plan on breeding him (and have a good reason to do so), have him neutered, it will slow down the need for"loving" and you will have to be a responisble owner and monitor his food intake and his exercise level to maintain his present weight.

How do you know if your dog is going to have separation anxiety? How do you know if the dog is going to get depressed? Have you tried this before? What would you do if Elvis ripped apart this toy and got separation anxiety?? I would definitely talk to the vet about your puppy passing out. Take the toy away. Your not supposed to humanize your animals and that's exactly what your doing. Do what's good for the puppy. Your not going to hurt his feeling. I seriously doubt the dog is going to get depressed and commit suicide. You've basically solved your own dilemma but don't want to follow through with it because why? You think you might hurt the dogs feelings? I would rather have an unhappy dog than a dead dog. Passing out that much on such a small dog could have really serious consequences. Talk to your Vet!

You definately have to take the toy away--i have a 11/2 yr old male chi who does the same thing and he was neutered at 9 mos! It is not a sexual thing, its a habit along with showing dominance. The "passing out" thing is something I havent seen yet and hope not to!!! But, I also dont think thats a good thing for a chihuahua. I had to go through all of my chi's toys that he might try and hump and toss them out but they are determined little guys and will always find something to use even a blanket!! Our vet said to not let him do that so we try to stop it; not by yelling at him but just distract him. They seem to get into a "zone" of no return so I usually clap my hands and he'll snap right out of it. Just take away his favorite hump toy and any other one he might use. Good luck!!

Almost forgot---neutering DOES NOT make your pet fat!!

I can't beleive you have allowed this to get this far. Take the toy away and get him nutered. Humping is not making love. Humping an object is a learned action and he has taken it to the very edge of the envelope by you letting him. Take the stupid toy away and if he trys to hump another tell him no and take that toy away too. He will soon learn that he can't hump anything anymore and both you and he will be better off.

Not bad for him he just gets exhausted. That is his girlfriend. Just let him have it a couple times a day and don't let him have it all the time.
