Vehicles entitled to free tax discs are -

Any vehicle first registered before January 1st 1973.
'Limited use' vehicles (forestry, horticulture, etc.)
Agricultural machines.
Mowing machines.
Steam powered vehicles
Electrically powered vehicles.
Drivers with certain disabilities may also be entitled to a free tax disc.

Check out the DVLA website. The only way you will not be liable for tax is if your car is pre 1973 (I think) or if you are an american serviceman stationed here. But check the website - it will all become clear!

It's all under Taxation classes - things like agricultural vehicles, disabled peoples vehicles, etc.

If the car is a vintage one or your car is the named car for someone who is getting the high rate of mobility component of disability living allowance

If you have a disability then contact the DVLA or your doctor and they will advise you, if your car is more than 25 years old your tax reminder will state that there is no charge.
