At the beginning of the Catholic church some priest did own a little property that they had prior to their priesthood. Later men who wanted to become priests gave all their property to the church "before" they were allowed ot be priests. If they tried to cheat they did not become priests.
Some well intentioned people try to answer these question by looking on google.com. Good luck.

I had this conversation with my Mom once, she mentioned that her priest lived in another town, and had his own house. I thought priests allways lived in the church rectory, and took vows of poverty. She said it depends on what order you belong to (Franciscan, Jesuit, or whatever.) Some orders take a vow of poverty, and live in the church rectory, priests from some orders draw a salary from the congregation and own thier own homes. I was rather suprised by that, thought they all had to take a vow of poverty.
