By attempting to make themselves better, people are forced to look within. It's a scary place sometimes. We all have faults that are hard to confront. In order to make ourselves better people, we have to first admit our flaws. Some people just aren't willing or able to do that. On the other hand, some people just don't have the desire to change. They, in their own eyes, are a picture of perfection. These are the people that make the world difficult, wanting to impose their will and ways on the rest of us.

Great question. Not everyone sees the good in life. Aristotle once said that "a liberal arts education trains the mind to see the good." Our society is one which frowns upon knowledge (or at least real knowledge) and for those individuals who are not in the know, they are ignorant of what benefits enlightenment can bring.
On the flip side, for those people who are more open to new things, the concept of enlightenment can be scary because it is in the far reaches if not beyond our comfort zone.

If your particulars represent your view of what enlightenment is, I would consider these to be laudable goals for anyone. But I don't think that your view is necessarily representative of most people's view of what "enlightenment" means. For me, the term has no particular meaning, so I do not use it.

That is not Enlightenment.
Bettering themselves...aka self improvement...is something else entirely.

the question is not should it be, but why it is. We are enlightened every day by those close to us and the expiriences that shape our world, so it cannot be avoided.

I follow the path of Jesus. I rather serve and help others than look for my own enlightenment.

Not if they cant handle it.
Old habits do not die easily; they are comfortable and familiar.
It takes mental and emotional effort to change.
