My almost three year old is so hyper, I could attach him to an electrical socket and light up the entire town! He will not sit down even for two minutes. He does not watch cartoons (this means he would have to sit still), he runs up and down the hall for hours, doesn't sleep during the day and falls asleep at long last at 2 in the morning! I take him for very long walks, to playhouses, trying to curb this energy, but it is useless. I have taken away sugar and chocolate, but nothing. He was born with developed muscle mass and is very strong for his age (he loves to upturn my cherry wood dining room table if you can believe it). How can I make him calm down?

I've taken him to a doctor and he says he is just very Healthy and I am Not! I am raising him on Crete (Greece) and trust me, we eat very healthy.

LOL just be glad you only have 1 energizer bunny... I have two.. they are partners in crime. I have resorted to keeping them outside as much as humanly possible.. and when that's not possible.. i have them help me.. Help me with dishes, clean (we turned cleaning into a game!) Just do whatever it takes to keep him out of trouble.. Good luck and hopefully he will outgrow this!

Some call it crazy, others will agree, but its the food dyes that you need to watch, more than anything else. Through 3 years of trial and error, we found that (In the US) FD & C Red #40, Yellows #5 & #6, set my son off. There were some studies done on this in the 70's, which the FDA dismisses. Their stance is that there is no correlation between dyes and hyper activity. However, through our own obeservation & experimenting, we know without a doubt that this is what affects our little one. We have purged it from his diet, opting for natural colorings, and he is a different kid. We can pick it out immediately if he comes home from somewhere and has had something with the dyes. Its like Jekyl & Hide.
To answer your question, Starjumper... more than you realize. Not only candy, but cheeses, prepared foods, crackers, juices, etc., etc. There was a dye that has been banned in some countries called Sudan Red, because it was a carcinogen. But, it is VERY similar in chemical make-up to the US Red #40. I don't know how things are labeled in Greece, but these ones that we avoid are all made from petroleum based chemicals. If you're not sure, try going 2 weeks without ANY artificial colorings in his diet (my sons reaction lasts 24 hours, at least), and see what happens. Also check the link below. Very informative.

I just asked a very similar question yesterday. I understand what you are going through 100%. I received some very good feedback. I don't know if you allowed, or this might get erased. Check the feedback from my question if you'd like. Our kids should be friends, lol.

Cut all sugars, not just chocolate..juice is full of it.
Try just milk and water for drinking..and omg, i dunno what to tell you..lol
Just please try and deal with it as best you can. You are doing everything you can by the sounds of it. How about swimming lessons? get him involved in some sports where he can burn some off...even a gymnastics group..it's not just for girls!
Whatever you do, don't take him to the dr for drugs for ADD, i think it's a sin to drug them because they are hyperactive.
Good luck with this.

Sounds like one of two things to me:
Either uncontrollable, unchanneled energy, which he would need to see a dr. for.
Or he's extremely defiant, and testing his limits, which would require more discipline.
I thought my 2yr. old was the energizer bunny, but your story has mine beat!
