I'm going to the USA next week and will be using my credit card, will I need to carry with my photographic ID in order to be able to use it? I do in Europe and was wondering if I need to in the States as well.

Yes, you'll need your photo ID. However, many retailers are not in the habit of checking ID - a practice that is unnerving at best and encouraging to ID thieves at worst. I would encourage you to call your credit card company and stipulate when making a purchase the retailer MUST check ID. This will make your visit safer.

Enjoy your trip!

Most stores and places will not ask you for photo ID because they don't really care about it. In America, when you do a purchase, the stores like the checkout lanes or payments to go quickly without a fuss. So you don't have anything to worry about. Besides, we tend to think of you Brits as rich money-carrying tourists. Have fun! :)

Some will ask for ID, others will not.

Businesses that Do ask for ID will not accept the card if you don't provide it.

All Businesses are supposed to check, with the exception of American Express. I understand that the Amex company wants their customers to feel "privileged" or part of an eclusive club and asks retailers not to ask for ID.

Hope this is helpful.

A lot of stores here will ask for photo ID when you are using a card. My cards all have my photo printed on them now so I've sort of solved that problem.

You should carry one just in case. Most people here don't give a rats, and probably won't card you.
