I got a Schipperke puppy about 4 weeks ago from a rescue group. The second week I had him, I took him to the vet for a puppy check up and his second set of shots. The vet found blood in his stool and treated him for Cocisity. His stool got worse, bloodier and had mucus in it. I took him back and they found Giardia. We have been treating that for a week and his stool got better for a few days and now is loose and bloody again. I'm taking in another stool sample today but I feel as though the vet really isn't addressing the issue. Any ideas?

**2/28 Update. The Vet says it is still Giardia, although the test results showed very little Giardia. I've thought about it being Parvo but his activity level hasn't decreased, he doesn't vomit and he hasn't lost his appetite. I wonder if the vet doesn't know what else to do at this point. We are going to continue with antibiotics for another 10 days. Thank you for your help!

Sometimes the stool will get worse before it's going to get better. Depends on how bad the infections were. I can't think of anything more to do for your pup than you are already doing but perhaps the vets can better tell you.
One week of treatment isn't enough time to help your pup get rid of all this. Cocisity is a tough nut to crack. Be pacient and keep the pup on the medication.
Your doing the right thing with having his stool checked thats the only way to tell if all is finally well with your pup.

Good luck!

Coccidia is a parasite found in the intestines of puppies. The more you work with pups the more you see it is common. An inconvenience, yes, but is usually treated with a 7 day course of Flagyl and/or albon. Giardia is a different issue and treated differently. If your pup's stool is like a brown/red and smells absolutely terrible, its another issue. Even if the pup has had its shots an immunity may not have built up. Check the hydration of your pup. Take hold of the skin on the neck, pull up and realease. The skin should quickly go back around the neck. If it is slow then your pup could be dehydrated. Another issue to bring up to your vet. When you take the stool in know what your pup has eaten, how much sleep time, how active--playful the pup is etc. Sckipperkees are active. Anything less is a possible problem. Personally I would take the pup to the vet not just the stool. The vet can gather so much more information about the condition of the pup on an actual visit than just checking the stool or just getting the info from the owner. Good luck!

There could be several causes for bloody stool I hope that there are no major issues...By you taking your pup to the vet is a great start... here are some links I found and hopefully you can find out more info..Im not a vet so I can't give you any accurate information but maybe these sites can... Good Luck

The first link I found is the most informative dog site.

Again the best of luck

Go to another vet as soon as you can. My puppy that I got back in January was having the same problem and the vet checked her and gave her an antibiotic and that didn't work of course and come to find out she had parvo. She was only 8 weeks old and I had to put her to sleep. I only had her for nine days. I also got her from a rescue group.Get your puppy checked again immediately. I pray that it's not parvo. Good luck and let us know how your puppy's doing.

Go to a different Vet and get a second opinion, now before your puppy dies.

ask the vet to check for hook worms, really common in puppies and will cause blood and mucus in the stool.
