I saw citrus degreasers in convenience stores -- is this the same substance as in the MTB degreaser (it says orange peel oil or something like that)? I thought that the special MTB degreasers can be a marketing ploy -- am I totally wrong?

Any degreaser will clean a chain. Simple Green and Orange Blast clean just as good as (and are cheaper than) bike-specific chain cleaning solutions. I do use Park Tool's chain cleaning machine filled with Simple Green.

Dish washing liquid works pretty good too but you have to rinse it with water and dry the chain off pretty thoroughly.

Your right on

The active ingredient is citric acid (fruit juice) usually derived from the peels. you can buy the stuff in drums (for industrial use), fancy one use containers and anywhere in between.

Like to guess which you pay more for.
