armour thyroid is natural (it comes from the same pig farm Armour Hot Dogs come from!) I started on armour but had to switch to levoxyl when I was pregnant because my sensitive stomach couldnt handle the smell first thing in the morning. There are other options, but the most important thing is that your tsh levels are right. if you're gaining weight (how much? what did you weigh to begin with?) there may be more going on, or your levels havent evened out yet. It's a good idea to make sure your dr understands that just because your level is 'in range' doesnt mean it's right for you.....mine has to be at a single specific point for my symptoms to go away.....

I'm assuming you are Hypothyroid. You may need to have your thyroid levels checked again. Your weight gain is probably not because of the Synthroid. I had to go on Cytomel (T3) as well as Levoxyl (Synthroid) which has helped with some weight loss. Armour Thyroid is a combo of T3 and T4 which may help you, but I had better luck with the synthetics for some reason. My thyroid levels were always normal and my Hypothyroidism and goiter only found through a thyroid ultrasound. A good website for information is: http://thyroid.about.com/. I hope you see an endocrinologist.

I wasn't on Synthoid, but I was on Levoxyl. Once on Levoxyl my weight did stop going up, but I didn't lose any of the weight I put on. With T4 medications, you need morning TSH to be around 1.0.

Because Levoxyl did not help with any of my symptoms, I eventually went on Armour thyroid. It was the best thing I ever did, however I did not lose weight on it. The reason was because the hypothyroidism weight gain caused me to develop insulin resistance (prediabetes) Once I got this treated, I started to lose weight.

If you are thinking of going on Armour, the dosage is adjusted by the free t4 and free t3, not theTSH. I will post some Armour related links below.

Regarding what another person stated. Armour is standardized, as its USP grade. It wouldn't get this stamp if it wasn't. Read the Armour website. It talks about how it is the same pill to pill. Those that say it isn't are doing so because of lack of information or what they have been told by the makers of the T4 meds. I have been on the same dosage of Armour for over 2 years.

Whoa! You shouldn't gain weight if the T-4 levels are still the same. The problem with Armour is that the levels of T-3 and T-4 are not standardized. (The amounts are not exactly the same in each pill since they come from a natural source.) I actually take Levothyroxine as well as a small amount of Armour. When I just take synthetic thyroid I feel lousy and fat and my fibromyalgia comes back! You need a blood test to find out what's going on!

I was on synthroid for many years, with no results. When I switched to armour, I lost weight rapidly, and my thyroid normalized for the first time in my life. It tastes nasty, but was very effective for me

You've gained weight after going on Synthroid? That's very unusual! Normally, hypothyroidism (Low T4 levels) result in weight gain. Increasing the amount of free T4 should have resulted in weight loss if anything.

You should talk to your Doctor about that.
