Most people are right handed and would hold weapons in their right hand!
When Napoleon seized most of Europe he got every one to drive there carts on the opposite side to stop confrontations!
Britain remained on the left hand side of the roads.
When Queen Victoria died the new king set about making Friends with the powers of the world, amongst other things he sent the emperor of japan a brand new Rolls Royce. This was the first car in Japan (right hand drive) so it was natural that he drove on the left hand side and all his subjects followed him.
All British ex colonies drive on the same side, Australia , South Africa etc.
Hope this sheds some light for you!
