At 18 months: a soft toy, stuffed doll, tea party set, wooden puzzle, board book, simple musical toy, shape sorting toy, her own little purse with play keys and cell phone. My daughter at this age loved to play "Mommy" and she would pretend to cook, take care of a baby, chat on the phone, etc.

Stuffed animals are always good. My daughter, however, insists that I be "pre-approved" for ANOTHER stuffed animal. How about a small sized (for tiny hands) board book like Dr. Seuss or "Are You My Mommy?". They are pretty indestructible and kids love them.

babies at that age loves to have things that make noise and light up...thing is, you don't want something too loud to annoy the parents so i must suggest to you ...
There's this spinning top that sings and light up and you can adjust the sound with a switch and it's perfect for a baby that age...it teaches them colors, and numbers, but they don't understand that but it helps...plus it's under $15.00 and you can find it in Wal-Mart in the baby section...

You can't go wrong with books! Alphabet, Words, Numbers, Colors, Animals, etc... Another good one would be bathtub toys. Bubble bath, floating ducks, etc.
