My sister just got lice and I'm paranoid about getting them too. I straighten my hair everyday. Do you think the intense heat from the straightener kills lice, or at least prevents them from wanting to be in my hair?

Do you know any other ways I can avoid getting lice from my sister?

Serious answers appreciated. Thanks!

Lice like warmth , nothing gets rid of lice but to do the treatments... Wash and spray down EVERYTHING... as a precaution i'd do everyon'es bedding, clothing, hair supplies a ll of it... in extremely hot water and get the lice shampoo or the cream i think it's NIX at the convenience store put it on the scalp and come through it with a fine metal tooth comb , leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash off.. if you don't kill all the lice it will come back so be efficent with all the cleaning and hair remedies.... as long as she has it and you guys live in the same place you are at high risk to get it..... everyone in your family needs to get checked and treated. sorry but straightening your hair won't do the trick and whatever you don't go to a hair salon we've had client come in for us to treat their lice, we aren't allowed to do any service on people who have lice or have come into contact with lice.

Don't sit in any (cloth) chairs she sits in. Stay away from her, her clothes, her bedding, etc. The best way to get rid of lice is to vacuum and wash everything. Soak your hair in apple cider vinegar--let it stand for 30 mins. Then wash it out, and comb through your hair with a fine-toothed comb. The vinegar kills the lice and unsticks the eggs, so they comb right out. It will also discourage lice from making a home in your hair.

Side note--people with clean hair are more likely to get lice--the bugs prefer clean hair to dirty hair.

No that will not take care of lice. If you are afraid of getting them buy a tea tree oil based shampoo and start using that religously. Be sure you don't share combs, brushes, hats or other things. Also be sure all of her bedding was washed in HOT water. If you do get them use tea tree oil rubbed into your scalp with a shower cap on your head for about 30 minutes then wash with a tea tree oil based shampoo.

No that will not prevent or get rid of lice. You should not share clothing or bedding with your sister. Her bedding and clothing needs to be washed. Her room needs to sprayed with pyretrhin based pesticide and bug bombs set off. Her head needs to be treated with lice shampoo. If that proves ineffective I've had excellent results using dog dip with pyrethrins. Smelly but effective.
