some light on this breed of dog, and it's behavior/habits etc... I would greatly appreciate it! XOXO Moonpie

Thank-you both very much! I knew they were used on ships, however...I thought they "rooted-out" rodents and such/slept with the captain/skipper, thus creating the name "Skipper-Key" because they fit into tiny cracks(like a key)...LOL!

Boy, do I sound like a "dumb blonde" or what? Wait, don't answer that...LOL!

Thank-you Mah, unfortunately... where I live, my "resources" are limited. And I would be getting a dog that has been with a family/person for quite sometime. So, I'm not sure if you can "teach a dog new tricks"?

I had a Schipperke when I lived back in Alaska, and all I had was a little two bedroom condo! They are wonderful, little dogs! They can be a bit noisy (but that is trainable), tend to be on the stubborn and independent side, and can be hard to house train. However, the independence can be a fantastic thing when you have a busy life, and can't entertain the dog 24/7. My Schipperke was pretty content to entertain herself with her toys, and didn't need me to interact with her constantly, which was nice. They do shed like crazy a couple of times a year, and they can be very mischievous when left alone in the house, so it's best to crate them or confine them to an exercise pen when you're gone. Older dogs can be trained easily, sometimes it just takes a bit longer. Since Schipperkes are such small dogs they can get lots of exercise running around the house, and don't need long walks outside. However, they have the endurance to go hiking or walking with you if you want to.

I've had 2 in the past, they are great little dogs (look much better with a tail) but because they are a spitz breed they can be noisy. They are very active and will also hunt vermin. They are intelligent and relatively easy to train. However, like any dog, you need to put in the time and effort in the beginning to reap the rewards of a well behaved pet later on.

I've heard they are a great breed of dog, I've always wanted to have one named gilligan (sing the Gilligan's Island theme song: ..."with Gilligan, the Schipperke") I've only done a little research on the breed because I'm not in an environment conducive to having a puppy, but I've read that they are great guard dogs and they dont shed.

Very loyal and loving pet. They are great with kids. They were used on the boats in Holland , they would sit on the front of the boat and bark if there was an obstacle in front on foggy nights
