I flatshare with the a man i work with and since i moved in rumours have spread that we are having an affair. people have got quite rude about it and yesterday my boss phoned to ask me if it was true i was pregnant?. I told him no this isnt true as well as making clear im not having an affair with my co worker. my problem is i could lose my job my boss doesnt allow people in a relationship to work together and even though we have a purely platonic relationship i think this latest nasty rumour may cost me my job. can i do anything legally to defend myself as opposed to attacking these people violently which is how im beginning to feel im going to react soon. this has gone on for nearly a year!

Ya this is grounds for a lawsuit so long as you arent lying... Hell, even if you were it would be grounds for a lawsuit.

Hell... even if you screamed sexual harassment hte company could go bankrupt.

So do the deed baby,... do the dirty deed.

Yes it is defamation. If you can prove that you are not in a relationship with your co worker then you have a good case and should say you will contest it in court should your boss threaten to fire you.

Also, was it written in your contract that you cannot go out with a co-worker, or has it been verbally made clear to all staff? If not then this also adds weight to your case.

Defamation is when somebody says something to someone else and causes your character to be spoil ed in the eyes of a 'reasonable man'. In other words the law uses the reasonable man' as a marker as to whether or not you have been defamed.
(Would a reasonable thinking person think the statements caused a negative effect on your character). The statements MUST be absolutely false for a case to exist.

If most people did not believe these statements put around then there is not a case for defamation.

Libel is the same but when the false statements have been written down.

Hope that helps

Ummm, is there any chance at all that the guy you flatshare with may have given the impression that there is more between you two than flatmates? I only ask because there is no smoke without fire, and I can't see any reason why everyone else would suddenly assume that you are a couple.

Perhaps you can try talking to him and getting him to help you clear all this up. If not, I can only suggest that you get legal advice, it's tricky. Don't forget though, that if this does end up unfortunately costing you your job, you surely have grounds foe unfair dismissal.

Right you need to sit your boss and everyone else down who are saying the romours about you and this bloke and talk to them and let them know how it is. This is not good for you as you will stress out and become ill. Takling face to face with everyone will help you and hopefully STOP the rumours. This is not nice at all what is happening to you and it should get sorted out. Your boss should have spoken to you face to face and NOT over the phone. Im sure he would not do that if it was about work and things like that. Talk and sort it out once and for all.
Good luck and be strong when you talk to them, its the best way to go about it. You could also ring the cab for some advice on this.

obviously you have encountered some childish people. They loath you. I suggest making it clear you are not in a relationship with this guy and that you are sick of them assuming. Violence will get you no where so don't act that way, ignore them and they will eventually stop. Obviously the teasers get something from doing that crap to you. Don't give them what they want and they just want to see you react and get upset. I wouldn't do that. Stay calm, and know you are not doing anything wrong. Tell your boss and if he or she doesn't stop asking you personal questions and won't leave you alone, find another job or better yet turn your boss in for harrassment. It is not your bosses business what you do after hours. Good luck.

Write a letter to your boss explaining how his question has troubled you. His question was totally wrong and unacceptable in this day and age. If there is any adverse comeback from your letter contact Citizens advice.

If that is the case and you lose your job because of it, you will have good grounds to sue for unfair dismissal.

Yes, this is slander, and you can most definitely sue him for it. You just need to have some proof to present to the judge.
