What can I do to keep my mind awake, and myself from getting so grumpy at work towards the end of the day? I have tried fruit, caffeine, granola bars, sugar.... Any ideas?

It does sound like you are getting low blood sugar at that time. You are starting on the right track with fruit and granola bars. Try this for 3-5 days and see if it helps - 2-3 hours after you START lunch have some protein like 1 oz of nuts (small palm full of almonds, walnuts, pecans, or cashews are best) or 1-2 cheese sticks or 1 glass of milk (8 oz). Then 1-2 hours after that have a piece of fruit. Or have the fruit and then protein.

This helps keep your blood sugar on an even level instead of peeking after lunch and continuing to drop until dinner. When your sugar drops is when you get so tired and grumpy.

Take care!

Hi. What you should be asking yourself is if what you are eating for lunch is appropriate. Some carbohydrates are broken down quickly by the digestive tract and cause a spike in the blood sugar which in turn causes a rapid increase in blood insulin levels to help regulate the blood sugar. The blood sugar then falls and often leads to feelings of fatigue, fogginess and hunger. Try eating a little more low-fat protein at lunch (tuna, chicken breast) with some greens and perhaps, some carbs from whole grain sources or berries if you need 'comfort food'. The protein helps regulate your blood sugar and takes longer to digest, so you avoid the roller coaster ride after lunch. You might find that if you need a little something mid afternoon, that some berries and natural yogurt might help. Hope that helps.

Hmmm...it seems to me that your choices might actually be CAUSING the grumpiness. Sugar is a quick fix. One minute you're on top of the world and the next you're crashing like nobody's business.

I would suggest a high-protein snack rather than sugar. Have a handful of nuts, a piece of cheese...something along those lines. And drink plenty of water throughout the day. This has worked well for me!

Try things without alot of sugar in it. Alot of sugar will produce a rush for your body then drop it making us feel lousy. Fresh fruit like bananas have lots of natural energy stored in um.

Don't eat as many starchy carbs/sugar around lunchtime........it is very likely this is causing a bad insulin response that makes you tired.
