Stay out of social situations where smoking and drinking occur frequently (bars in particular). Taper off smoking gradually, try to only smoke out doors at home. Go as long as you can without lighting up. Eventually stop altogether. You may end up drinking and eating more at first, but this should pass within a few weeks. It took time to develope your habit and addiction to nicotine, and will take time to go away. The key is to slowly ween yourself off. Work on quitting smoking for now. I quit completely 6 months ago after 12 years smoking, and hopefully will never go back. I also drink less often. Quitting is the best gift you can give yourself and the people close to you. Good luck, at least your mind is in the right direction!

Do you wish to turn over a new leaf, or an entire tree? Smoking and drinking may occur in different environments as well as together. Perhaps you can drink and smoke at home but not at work. You must go outside to smoke at most locations now. As an engineer(?), you should be able to evaluate the situation and come up with a logical solution. Try negative feedback? Place ten dollars(?) in a can for each infraction of your plan and reward yourself with the savings from your (bad) habits plus the fines. New golf clubs? How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? Only one, but it must want to change. Good luck.

Stop both at the same time if you really want to quit. One habit reinforces the other. Smoking goes hand in hand with drinking and nothing tastes better than a cigarette while drinking.

whys this an engineering question?

Quiting smoking is good, it can be tough but it is worth it. Trying to quit both at the same time...tougher... quitting later is another accomplishment you can boast about
Good Luck
