Welcome to parenthood! I'm a mom of 7, and I have a 4-yr-old son. He had some bad eating problems as well (like if it isn't hot dogs or chocolate cake, he doesn't want it). I started asking him to "help" me make dinner. He loves it! And now he will help set the table too.

You could try getting your son some food books or cookbooks, and ask him which ones he'd like to eat, if he wants to help make it, etc. Then let him!!

If it isn't a behavior issue, then you should bring this up to your doctor who can run some tests to see why he is not eating.

Would it be possible that he might have a sore throat or something like that? Maybe he is cutting some more back teeth and his back gums are hurting. He might even have a loose front tooth already, although 4 is a little early, but you never know. Talk to him and ask him if something is bothering him. It might be simpler than you think. Just sit him down and calmly talk to him about what's bothering him. Talk openly with him and try to understand his side of things. Maybe he gets upset if he's in the middle of something like playing and doesn't want to take time out to have dinner. If that's the case, try to calmly explain to him that it's dinner time and he needs to come and eat. That whatever he was doing will still be there when he's finished. I hope that this helps some. I have a 5 y/o and a 3 1/2 y/o and I know all to well the power struggles and trying to get them to stop what they are doing to come and eat. Good luck!!!

NO it is not normal !! , who is the parent?? , who is in control ??
if my child had ever done that oh my god ...why do you allow anything to get so far out of hand to where it has gotten to this ??

I am not being mean here , but you have to realize this child's behavior is a direct result of your parenting ...mine acted up at the table one time , I gave them a spanking of a life time , now at dinner time I say dinner is ready lets get ready to eat . they drop what they are doing , say yes sir then go wash up , then they come to the table , they sit quietly and eat , when finished they ask to be excused from the table once we say yes they get up rinse their dishes ,then place them in the dishwasher , kiss their mom on the cheek and thank her for dinner , then go brush their teeth and resume normal activities
And for you to be at your wits end only shows the child is gaining control of the house ...do not be scared to "lay down the law " in your home

maybe he has developed GERD. take him to a dr. to rule out acid reflux, toothache or other medical disorder that could make eating painful.

could also just be a phrase and is testing you. my question would be how do u respond to his fits?
