Jason,

AFV (Armored Fighting Vehicles) are beginning to replace heavily armored fighting vehicles such as MBTs (Main Battle Tanks).

The AFV are typically multipurpose (either a APC Armored Personnel Carrier or an IFV Infantry Fighting Vehicle), fast moving and moderately armored with narrow tread or large tyres. They tend to carry small armaments such as TOW missiles, heavy machineguns and/or anit-aircraft defenses (such as SAMs or cannon).

Some examples from around the world are:

Russia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTR-90

UK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrior_%28vehicle%29

USA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Bradley

France: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMX-10P

Armored fighting currently is seeing much less of an emphasis on the MBT as it's capabilities are limited to distance infantry support and large scale tank battles (as were anticipated between NATO-Warsaw Pact battles in Central Europe). With the large amount of anti-tank weapondry available now, a fast moving and maneuverable vehicle that gets infantry to and from the battle field and hot zones.

Actually I had an idea in mind for a future tank and was considering turning it into an Artwork
